Communication, crises et renouveau

We talk a lot about female mental load, and rightly so. But there is a male mental load that often goes unseen: that of the man who must be strong, who must not cry, who carries financial pressure without being able to voice it, and who ultimately breaks down in silence. In France, men account for 75% of suicides. This statistic alone justifies opening up this conversation.

Male Mental Load: What Are We Talking About?

Male mental load comprises:

  • Performance pressure: being the provider, the protector, the pillar
  • Émotional prohibition: not showing vulnerability, "being a man"
  • Identity dissonance: being both the involved modern father and the traditional provider
  • Émotional isolation: fewer intimate confidants than women
  • Sexual pressure: performance, initiation, constant desire expected

Why Men Break Down in Silence

Masculine Socialization

Brannon's work (1976) identifies four injunctions of traditional masculinity:

  • "No sissy stuff": never do anything feminine
  • "The big wheel": succeed, win, dominate
  • "The sturdy oak": be solid as an oak, never bend
  • "Give 'em hell": be aggressive, take risks
  • These injunctions trap men in a role that cuts them off from their emotions — and from the ability to ask for help.

    Normative Masculine Alexithymia

Levant (1992) speaks of "normative masculine alexithymia": a difficulty identifying and expressing emotions that is not a clinical disorder but a consequence of upbringing. "How are you?" — "I'm fine" is often the automatic response, even when things are far from fine.

    Specific Warning Signs in Men

    • Chronic irritability: anger as the only acceptable émotion
    • Increased consumption: alcohol, screens, excessive exercise
    • Relationship withdrawal: stonewalling, silence, avoidance of intimate conversations
    • Risk-taking behaviors: reckless driving, excess in all areas
    • Professional overcommitment: work as a refuge
    • Physical symptoms: pain, insomnia, chronic fatigue

    The CBT Approach for Men

    1. Legitimize Vulnerability

Vulnerability is not weakness: it's a strength. Brené Brown (2012) shows that the capacity to show vulnerability is the foundation of authentic connection.

    2. Develop Émotional Vocabulary

Moving from "I'm fine" to "I feel frustrated", "I'm worried", "I need comfort". Émotional granularity is a skill that can be learned.

    3. Restructure Beliefs

"Asking for help = weakness" → "Asking for help = emotional intelligence"

    4. Create Safe Spaces to Talk

Men's groups, individual therapy, talking circles: these spaces allow breaking emotional isolation without judgment.

    Conclusion

Male mental load is real and legitimate. Recognizing it in no way diminishes female mental load — both coexist. The challenge is to allow men to break the silence without shame, and to access the psychological care they need. Breaking down is not failing: it's the signal that it's time to ask for help.
