Maradona: The Genius, the Myth, and the Cracks in the Soul – A Psychological Reading
Few public figures have embodied the paradoxes of human existence with as much brilliance and complexity as Diego Armando Maradona. From the child prodigy of the Villa Fiorito shantytowns to a global icon, from the football god to the "Pibe de Oro" (Golden Boy) brought low by his addictions, his life was a tumultuous symphony of meteoric rise, unparalleled glory, and descents into hell. As a CBT psychotherapist, it is fascinating to explore the psychological dynamics that may have underpinned such an extraordinary and tragic journey, drawing on the public facts of his existence.
Maradona was much more than a footballer: he was a symbol, a projection of a nation's hopes, a flamboyant rebel. But behind this public facade lay a man grappling with inner demons, deep wounds, and a relentless, often misdirected, quest for recognition and love. His story offers us a unique opportunity to reflect on how our early experiences, psychological schemas, and coping mechanisms shape our lives, even for the greatest among us.
The Child of the Shantytowns and the Divine Ascent: A Brief Biography
Born on 30 October 1960 into the extreme poverty of Villa Fiorito, a deprived neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Diego Maradona grew up in an environment where survival was a daily struggle. Football was his lifeline, his escape, and quickly, his destiny. His talent was so precocious and evident that he was propelled onto the professional stage as a teenager, becoming his family's financial support. This radical transition from destitution to opulence, from anonymous child to national messiah, was of unprecedented psychological violence.

His sporting career is legendary: World Cup winner in 1986 with Argentina, hero of Naples where he led the club to its only Italian championship titles, he made history with his genius with the ball at his feet, his vision of the game, and his ability to rouse crowds. But alongside this meteoric rise, his personal life was marked by scandals, recurrent health problems linked to drug addiction and alcoholism, tumultuous relationships, and a clear inability to manage the immense pressure and disproportionate expectations placed upon his shoulders. He went from "god" to "fallen god" in the eyes of many observers, oscillating between periods of exaltation and phases of depression, a trajectory that could suggest significant mood swings.
Early Maladaptive Schemas: The Roots of Wounds
Jeffrey Young, the founder of schema therapy, identified "early maladaptive schemas" (EMS) that develop in childhood and adolescence in response to unmet fundamental needs. These schemas become rigid filters through which we perceive the world and ourselves, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours throughout our lives. For Maradona, several EMS appear plausibly to have been activated and reinforced by his environment and unique trajectory:
1. Abandonment/Instability Schema
Growing up in extreme poverty often implies material instability and uncertainty regarding the satisfaction of primary needs. Even if Maradona's family was close-knit, the context of deprivation can generate deep anxiety linked to the fear of being abandoned or losing what one has. The brutal transition from poverty to wealth, then the constant threats to his career and health (due to injuries, suspensions, addictions) may have reactivated this schema, creating an underlying feeling that everything could be lost at any moment. This may explain a difficulty in grounding himself and a relentless quest for external validation.
2. Emotional Deprivation Schema
Although Maradona always expressed deep love for his family, the immense pressure of being the financial "saviour" from a very young age may have meant that his own emotional needs (understanding, empathy, unconditional attention) were sometimes relegated to the background. Being valued primarily for his on-field performances may have created a feeling that love and recognition were conditional, based on what he did rather than what he was. This lack could have fuelled an insatiable thirst for admiration and a difficulty in feeling truly loved for himself, contributing to a sense of loneliness despite the crowds.
3. Defectiveness/Shame Schema
Poverty and humble origins can engender a feeling of inferiority or shame, even if one has escaped them. For Maradona, despite his glory, this schema could have persisted, pushing him to constantly prove his worth, defy authority, and react excessively to criticism. His sometimes virulent reactions to the media or institutions could be interpreted as an attempt to mask or compensate for this deep vulnerability. Addiction itself can be an attempt to escape these feelings of shame and inadequacy.
4. Dependence/Incompetence Schema
Paradoxically for a football genius, dependence on his entourage (agents, managers, friends) to manage the practical aspects of his life, combined with constant pressure and the relative isolation of celebrities, may have reinforced a feeling of incompetence in areas of daily life. His difficulty in managing his finances, personal affairs, and even his health without the help of others testifies to this schema. Addictions can also be seen as a form of dependence, where the substance becomes a substitute for autonomy and emotional regulation.
5. Entitlement/Grandiosity Schema
The almost divine adoration he received from a very young age, the conviction of being "chosen" to lift his family and country out of destitution, may have engendered an Entitlement/Grandiosity schema. This schema is characterised by the belief of being superior to others, of deserving to be treated differently, and of being above the rules. Supported by his entourage and the media, this schema can make it difficult to accept limits, criticism, or the consequences of his actions, contributing to impulsive behaviours and a sense of impunity. This schema can be a supercompensation strategy for underlying Defectiveness/Shame or Emotional Deprivation schemas.
Defence Mechanisms and Cognitive Distortions
Faced with these painful schemas and external pressure, Maradona developed defence mechanisms and cognitive distortions, unconscious strategies to manage anxiety and protect his ego.
1. Splitting and Idealisation/Devaluation
As described by Otto Kernberg, splitting is a primitive mechanism that involves perceiving the world and oneself in extreme terms: all good or all bad. Maradona often oscillated between idealisation (of himself as a hero, of certain friends or political figures) and devaluation (of his opponents, journalists, FIFA). He was either a god or a victim, but rarely a complex human being with strengths and weaknesses. This dynamic is reflected in the public's reactions towards him, shifting him from "god" to "devil" in an instant.
2. Projection
Maradona frequently resorted to projection, attributing his own difficulties or failures to others (referees, sports officials, media). This allowed him to maintain an intact self-image and offload responsibility for his problems, even if it prevented him from confronting his own behaviours.
3. Denial
Denial, particularly of the severity of his addictions and their consequences for his health and life, was a central mechanism. Despite hospitalisations and warnings, he often minimised the impact of his choices, which is common in substance use disorders.
4. Omnipotence
Born from his exceptional talent and adulation, a certain omnipotence developed, the belief that he could overcome anything, defy the laws of physics on the pitch, and perhaps even the laws of health or society off it.
As for cognitive distortions (Aaron Beck), we can note:
* All-or-nothing thinking: "I'm the best" or "I'm rubbish."
* Catastrophising: Amplifying the negative consequences of an event.
* Arbitrary inference: Drawing hasty conclusions without sufficient evidence.
* Emotional reasoning: Believing that one's emotions are objective truth ("I feel guilty, therefore I am guilty").
The Hypothetical Attachment Style
According to John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth's attachment theory, our first interactions with our parental figures shape how we relate to others. Given Maradona's environment and his tumultuous interpersonal relationships, a disorganised (or disoriented) attachment style seems plausible.
This style often develops when the child faces attachment figures who are simultaneously sources of comfort and fear or unpredictability. In Maradona's case, extreme childhood poverty, even within a loving family, can create an inherently unpredictable and stressful environment. The brutal transition to celebrity, overwhelming adoration, and then fierce criticism may have reinforced this sense of relational unpredictability.
Characteristics of a disorganised attachment include:
* Contradictory behaviours (seeking proximity followed by rejection).
* Difficulty regulating emotions, leading to intense reactions.
* Chaotic interpersonal relationships, marked by mistrust and ambivalence.
* A fragmented self-image.
This could explain Maradona's extreme oscillations between seeking admiration, fierce loyalty towards his loved ones, and outbursts of anger, break-ups, betrayals
