Emotional Questioning: When You Doubt Your Own Feelings in a Relationship

There are moments in a relationship when something shifts internally — and the question surfaces: do I truly still love this person? Is what I feel love, or something else? This questioning can be fleeting, or it can settle in for a long time.

In the article that follows, I explore emotional regulation. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed an emotional regulation test that helps you take stock of how you experience and regulate your emotions. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.

It's a destabilising experience, made more so because it's often lived in solitude — hard to share with one's partner, hard to tell friends, sometimes hard to put into words even for oneself.

What emotional questioning can mean

Love that is evolving — not disappearing

The love of the early stages of a relationship is rarely the same as that of ten years of shared life. The passionate love of the first years — intense, idealised, carried by novelty — transforms. It can become quieter, more grounded, less spectacular. For some people, this transformation is experienced as a loss or a gap, when in reality it is a natural evolution.

Doubting one's feelings because the intensity has changed is not the same as no longer being in love.

Relationship anxiety (ROCD)

There is a form of obsessive anxiety centred on the relationship — ROCD (Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Those who experience it find themselves in intrusive and repetitive questioning about their feelings ("do I truly love them?"), about compatibility ("are they the right person?"), or about the other's flaws. This questioning is not a revelation about the relationship — it is an anxiety symptom that takes the relationship as its object.

If the questioning is constant, intrusive, and hard to set aside despite the absence of a real trigger, this is a lead worth exploring with a professional.

Genuine dissatisfaction

Emotional questioning can also point toward something concrete: an unexpressed dissatisfaction, an unmet need, a distance that has settled in and was never named. In this case, the doubt is less about feelings than about the state of the relationship — and it calls for a conversation rather than solitary introspection.

A difficult life period

Depression, professional burnout, bereavement, or a period of intense stress can blunt the capacity to feel connection and desire — including in a relationship that is otherwise going well. In these contexts, emotional questioning may reflect a temporary state rather than a reality about the relationship.

How to orient yourself

When facing emotional questioning, some questions can help get your bearings: did this questioning appear gradually or suddenly? Is there an event or life period that coincides with its emergence? Is it accompanied by other symptoms (generalised anxiety, low mood, exhaustion)? Has the partner changed, or is it something in oneself that has changed?

These questions don't provide a definitive answer — but they help begin to understand what kind of questioning this is.
