Kylian Mbappé: The Star and the Weight of Expectations – A CBT Psychological Reading

As a CBT psychopractitioner, I often observe how exceptional life paths, marked by intense pressure and unprecedented media exposure, shape the individual psyche. Kylian Mbappé's case is, in this respect, a fascinating case study. A symbol of meteoric success, raw talent forged by hard work, he embodies for many the hope and pride of a diverse France. But behind the icon, there is a man, and it is this psychological dimension that we will explore, formulating hypotheses based on public facts and theoretical frameworks proven in cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT).

From Bondy to the Summit: An Extraordinary Trajectory

Born on 20 December 1998 in Bondy, Seine-Saint-Denis, Kylian Mbappé Lottin comes from a family environment where sport and education are pillars. His father, Wilfrid Mbappé, is a football coach at AS Bondy, and his mother, Fayza Lamari, a former high-level handball player, is a strong and protective figure. This solid family structure, imbued with discipline and benevolence, undoubtedly played a fundamental role in his early development.

From a very young age, his talent was dazzling. He joined the National Football Institute of Clairefontaine, a mandatory step for the elite of French football, before moving to AS Monaco's training centre. His ascent was meteoric: first professional match at 16, French champion with Monaco in 2017, then a resounding transfer to Paris Saint-Germain the same year. In 2018, at just 19 years old, he became a world champion with the French National Team, impressing with his maturity, speed, and efficiency.

This trajectory, marked by rare precocity and colossal media exposure, is fertile ground for psychological analysis. How does an individual manage such pressure? How does he build his identity in the spotlight, carrying the hopes of millions of people, and moreover, being a powerful symbol of French diversity and success?

Plausible Early Maladaptive Schemas: The Foundations of Ambition

In Jeffrey Young's approach, early maladaptive schemas (EMS) are deep and pervasive themes concerning oneself and one's relationships with others, developed during childhood or adolescence, and elaborated throughout life. They are resistant to change and have a significant impact on thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and relationships. In Kylian Mbappé's case, several schemas can be considered, not as weaknesses, but as driving forces which, when well managed, can propel one towards excellence.

The schema of Unrelenting Standards is the most evident. This schema is characterised by an underlying belief that one must strive to meet extremely high standards of performance and behaviour, usually to avoid criticism. Kylian's life is a perfect illustration of this incessant quest for perfection: to be the best, score goals, win titles, break records. His discipline, impeccable work ethic, and desire to constantly improve, even after reaching pinnacles, are clear manifestations of this. This schema, often inherited from an environment where performance was valued (his high-level athlete parents), can be a powerful source of motivation, but also of considerable internal pressure. It pushes one never to be satisfied, always to aim higher, which, in a performance sport, is a major asset.

Another plausible schema is that of Approval-Seeking/Recognition-Seeking. Although Mbappé projects an image of strong autonomy and self-confidence, his career is intrinsically linked to public recognition. Football is a spectacle, and validation by peers, the media, and supporters is a powerful driver. This is not a weakness, but a way to validate his worth. The desire to be recognised as the "best player in the world", to win the Ballon d'Or, or to make history in his sport, falls within this dynamic. This schema can be healthy if balanced by solid intrinsic self-esteem, but it can also make one vulnerable to criticism or disappointment.

Finally, we could consider, in a more nuanced way, a schema of Emotional Inhibition. Observing his public behaviour, one notes great self-control, an ability to remain calm under pressure, and not to let too many emotions show. This inhibition is not necessarily an inability to feel, but rather a regulatory mechanism to maintain control and concentration in an environment where vulnerability can be perceived as a weakness. In high-level sport, this ability to "keep a cool head" is crucial.

These schemas, although potentially "maladaptive" in an ordinary sedentary life context, are for an athlete of his calibre levers for performance. The challenge, as Young highlights, is to recognise them to prevent them from becoming too rigid or sources of suffering.

Defence Mechanisms and Big Five: The Construction of Character

Defence mechanisms, initially conceptualised by psychoanalysis (Anna Freud, Otto Kernberg), are unconscious psychic processes aimed at reducing anxiety or stress. In a high-level athlete, they are essential for maintaining mental balance in the face of adversity.

Sublimation is undoubtedly the most powerful defence mechanism at play. Energy, competitive aggression, ambition, and the drive for self-transcendence are channelled in a socially acceptable and highly valued manner in football. Instead of manifesting in destructive forms, these energies are transformed into athletic performance, the art of play, and leadership. Rationalisation is also perceptible in his public statements. Kylian Mbappé is a thoughtful individual who often explains his choices and motivations with clear logic. This allows him to make sense of sometimes difficult decisions (such as career choices) and to manage media pressure by presenting a coherent and controlled discourse. Identification with ideal figures (Zidane, Ronaldo) and with the image of a leader and champion is another mechanism. He appropriates the qualities of these role models to build his own identity as a player and captain, assuming the responsibilities that come with it.

If we refer to the Big Five model (the OCEAN model), which describes personality according to five broad traits, we can formulate hypotheses about Kylian Mbappé's personality:

* Conscientiousness: Very high. His discipline, organisation, sense of duty, perseverance, and quest for excellence are manifest. This is the most salient trait and the driving force of his career.
* Extraversion: High. He is confident, assertive, comfortable in public, charismatic, and naturally takes on the role of a leader. He enjoys being the centre of attention and excels in the social interactions required by his status.
* Openness to Experience: Moderate to high. He appears curious, eager to learn (he has shown an interest in languages, culture), and adaptable to new tactical situations or different environments.
* Agreeableness: Moderate. He is capable of cooperation and teamwork, but also of firmness and self-assertion when it comes to defending his interests or those of his team. He does not hesitate to express his opinions.
* Neuroticism / Emotional Stability: Low neuroticism, therefore great emotional stability. He appears calm and serene under pressure, resilient in the face of criticism, and capable of managing the intense stress inherent in his profession.

Hypothesised Attachment Style: Fundamental Security

The concept of attachment style, developed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, describes how we bond with others, influenced by our early relational experiences with our primary attachment figures (generally parents).

Given his stable, protective yet stimulating family environment, a secure attachment style is the most probable hypothesis for Kylian Mbappé. His parents likely acted as a reliable "secure base", allowing him to explore the world (and football) knowing he could always return to them for comfort and support. Characteristics of secure attachment include:
* The ability to trust others and rely on them.
* Good self-esteem and confidence in one's own worth.
* The ability to manage emotions and express them appropriately.
* Autonomy and the ability to take initiative.
* Resilience in the face of difficulties.

These traits are manifest in Mbappé: his self-confidence on the pitch, his ability to make important decisions, his leadership, and his resilience in the face of failures or criticism. He appears capable of forming strong bonds and navigating complex relationships (teammates, coaches, agents, media) with a certain ease. Secure attachment provides him with the necessary psychological foundation to withstand the extreme pressures of his career and maintain a stable sense of self despite the fluctuations of glory and criticism.

CBT Lessons for the Reader: Managing Pressure and Developing Serenity

Kylian Mbappé's journey, although exceptional, offers valuable lessons for each of us, applicable through the tools of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies.

  • Identify and Restructure Cognitive Distortions:
  • Mbappé faces constant pressure and disproportionate expectations. It is probable that he has developed an ability to identify and restructure negative or irrational thoughts. For example, "all-or-nothing thinking" ("If I'm not the best, I'm a failure") or "catastrophising" ("If we lose this match, it's the end of the world"). CBT teaches us to question these automatic thoughts, to replace them with more balanced and realistic interpretations. For the reader, this means learning not to be overwhelmed by perfectionism or the fear of failure, but to view setbacks as learning opportunities.
