Parenting style: what kind of parent are you, and what impact?

In the 1960s, the American psychologist Diana Baumrind identified several parenting styles that have a documented influence on child development. Her work, refined since by many researchers, remains a central reference in developmental psychology.

Understanding your own parenting style — and its effects on your child — is not an exercise in guilt. It is a lever for adjustment.

The four parenting styles

The authoritarian style

Many rules, little explanation, little warmth. Obedience is expected without discussion. Children raised in this style tend to be disciplined but may lack autonomy, initiative and self-esteem. The relationship is based more on fear than on trust.

The permissive style

Few rules, plenty of warmth. Parents avoid conflict, give in easily, and struggle to hold boundaries. Children may lack structure, have difficulty managing frustration, and encounter difficulties at school.

The authoritative (or democratic) style

This is the style most consistently associated with positive outcomes in research. It combines clear rules with an explanation of their purpose, warmth and emotional support, and attentiveness to the child's needs. Authority is exercised with kindness, not with rigidity.

The uninvolved (or neglectful) style

Few rules and little warmth. The parent is barely involved in the child's life. This is the style most strongly associated with developmental difficulties.

What matters

Parenting styles are not fixed categories — most parents combine elements of several styles depending on the situation, on their own state, and on their child's needs. What matters is the overall tendency and the ability to reflect on your own practice.
