School is designed for an average pupil profile. For children whose cognitive profile diverges from this average — whether in how they process information, processing speed, working memory, executive functions, or how they approach symbols — the school path can become an accumulation of misunderstandings and difficulties.
These children are not less intelligent. They learn differently.
What "atypical learning" covers
The term refers to a range of cognitive profiles that diverge from the norm without being pathologies in themselves:
Specific learning disabilities
These include several distinct disorders: dyslexia (reading), dysorthography (spelling), dyscalculia (mathematics), dyspraxia (coordination and motor organisation), dysphasie (language). These are neurological differences — the child has no vision or hearing problem, but their brain processes certain types of information differently.
High intellectual potential (HIP)
Some children experiencing academic difficulties have unidentified high intellectual potential. Giftedness can paradoxically generate boredom, school refusal, disruptive behaviours, or performance anxiety.
Inattention and impulsivity (ADHD)
ADHD affects executive functions — the ability to plan, sustain attention, and inhibit impulses. Children with ADHD may have entirely normal intellectual abilities but specific difficulties in how their processing is structured.
Mild autism profiles
Some children have a mild autistic profile — a different way of processing social and sensory information — that can affect how they learn in a traditional school context.
Why early identification matters
A child with unidentified atypical learning often accumulates failures, develops a poor self-image, and sometimes school-related anxiety or depression. Identification and adaptation of the environment can radically change the trajectory.
The goal is not to label the child — it is to understand how they function in order to offer supports that suit them.
What to do if an atypical profile is suspected
A neuropsychological assessment, carried out by a specialist psychologist, makes it possible to precisely identify the child's profile and to orient towards appropriate support (speech therapy, occupational therapy, educational assistance, school adaptations).
