Damso: A Recent Relationship Set Against a Decade-Long Career
*This article is written from a cognitive behavioral therapy perspective, focused on observable, publicly documented facts, never on a clinical assessment of the person discussed.*
If you too are in a relationship that is still new and want to better understand how you communicate with your partner, ScanMyLove, our relationship conversation analysis tool, can help you see more clearly from your real exchanges. You can also take stock of your own emotional security with my attachment style test.
Damso has established himself, since his first album Batterie faible (2016), as one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary French-language rap. The albums that followed (Ipséité, Lithopédion, QALF, then BEYAH) each confirmed a position already won: that of an artist whose career depends on no outside news to exist in the French-language music landscape.
It is in this context, and not the other way around, that his private life has occasionally made the news. In March 2025, his relationship with model Milla Lapidus was made public at a Courrèges show during Paris Fashion Week. The two were then seen together on several occasions, leaving a Yves Saint Laurent event, then at Roland-Garros.
What distinguishes this sequence from a simple media outing is that Damso himself talked about it in his interviews, mentioning the influence of his partner on his creative work at the time he was conceiving the album BEYAH. That a still-recent relationship can already influence creative work is far from trivial: it is precisely what I explore in my book Comprendre son attachement, on how the emotional security of a new relationship can carry over into everyday work.
What this "sense of proportion" says about a well-documented perception bias
Still, things need to be put in their proper proportion. At the time of writing this article, the relationship between Damso and Milla Lapidus has been public for a little over a year. No marriage, no shared birth has been announced. It is a real, documented relationship, commented on by the person himself, but still recent in the span of a public life.
This imbalance between the volume of media coverage devoted to an eighteen-month relationship and that devoted to a decade of musical career illustrates a perception bias that is well documented in social psychology: salience bias, whereby a recent, personal piece of information takes up, in the public's perception, a disproportionate place compared with facts that are far more structuring over time. This general mechanism says nothing about the real importance Damso himself attaches to this relationship in his life; it only explains why it occupies, in the news, a place out of proportion to its actual duration. Knowing how to give a recent relationship its proper place, without letting it eclipse a trajectory built over nearly a decade, connects directly to what I discuss in my book **Dépendance affective**, on the emotional autonomy that makes it possible to live a relationship without letting it absorb everything else.
This proportion is consistent with the way Damso has always managed the balance between public and private life: a career built first on music, where personal elements appear only in touches, generally when the artist himself chooses to mention them.
What remains, by implication, the most solidly established in his path is the consistency of an artistic trajectory that has run for nearly a decade without depending on any personal event to sustain itself.
Going further: Giving a recent relationship its proper place, without letting it eclipse everything else, is a question of emotional security, the one I explore in detail, with the four adult attachment styles, in Comprendre son attachement. Read an excerpt
In brief — Damso has established himself since 2016 as one of the major voices of French-language rap. His relationship with model Milla Lapidus, public since March 2025, has been described by the artist himself as an influence on his album BEYAH: a real and openly acknowledged relationship, but still recent in the span of a career.
