Gaslighting Test: are you being manipulated?: what it measures and how to interpret your score
Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that makes a person doubt their own perception of reality, their memory and their judgement, until they believe they are "overreacting" or "going crazy". Insidious, it sets in gradually and erodes self-confidence. This test explores five observable mechanisms: denial of facts, casting doubt on your memory and perception, blame reversal, discrediting and isolation, and the impact on you. It is not a diagnosis, but a benchmark to name what you are experiencing and regain your footing.
In the article that follows, I explore gaslighting and being made to doubt your reality. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a gaslighting test that helps you take stock of the signs of gaslighting in your relationship. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.
What the test measures
- Denying facts, words or events that actually happened.
- Making you doubt your memories, what you saw, heard or felt.
- Twisting situations so you end up feeling responsible and guilty.
- Painting you as "too sensitive", unstable or "crazy", isolating you.
- Confusion, loss of confidence in your judgement, feeling you are "going crazy".
How to interpret your score
Your result reads as an intensity, not a diagnosis:
- No significant gaslighting : Gaslighting mechanisms are barely present. Disagreements may exist, but your perception of reality is not systematically challenged.
- Moderate signs of gaslighting : Several gaslighting mechanisms appear. They deserve attention: this type of manipulation sets in gradually and should not be minimized.
- Marked gaslighting : The gaslighting pattern is clear and affects your confidence in your own judgement. Support is strongly advised to regain your footing.
- Severe gaslighting likely : The mechanisms are strongly present and the impact on your mental health is significant. This configuration calls for outside help quickly.
