Hypersensitivity Test: Understand Your Score Without Labeling Yourself

Overwhelmed in noisy environments, deeply moved by a work of art, exhausted after an overly busy day, sensitive to atmospheres and others' emotions: these signs describe Sensory Processing Sensitivity. Approximately one in five people exhibits this trait. The test is not meant to pigeonhole you, but to help you understand your functioning to better adapt your life.

In the article that follows, I explore hypersensitivity and intensity of feeling. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a hypersensitivity test that helps you take stock of your degree of hypersensitivity. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.

What the Test Measures

  • Sensory reactivity: sensitivity to noise, light, textures, hunger.
  • Depth of processing: tendency to analyze, anticipate, ruminate.
  • Emotional reactivity and empathy: intensity of feelings, permeability to others' emotions.
  • Overstimulation: the speed at which you feel «overly stimulated».

Interpreting Your Score

  • Low: average sensitivity, low overstimulation.
  • Moderate to High: You exhibit characteristics of a highly sensitive person. This is not a problem to be corrected — it's a way of functioning to be respected (breaks, controlled environments, emotional regulation).
  • Very High with Distress: If sensitivity is accompanied by anxiety or exhaustion, the test encourages distinguishing the trait (stable) from a state (modifiable) — and potentially seeking support.
The report separates sensory sensitivity from emotional reactivity: one can be very sensitive to noise without being particularly emotional, and vice versa. Take the test: Managing Your Emotions → — When emotional reactivity is high, assessing how you regulate intense feelings helps you turn overstimulation into something you can steer rather than endure.

When to Take the Test

  • You regularly feel «too much» compared to others.
  • You seek to understand your need for calm and withdrawal.
  • You want to transform a burdensome sensitivity into an embraced resource.

FAQ

Is hypersensitivity a disorder? No: it's a normal temperament trait, not a diagnosis. The test measures its intensity. Can it be «cured»? There's nothing to cure. You learn to adapt your environment and regulate emotional intensity.

In brief: Hypersensitivity is neither a disorder nor a superpower, but a temperament trait: a nervous system that processes information more deeply. The test identifies the intensity of this reactivity, without pathologizing it.
