Video Games and Children: Between Pleasure, Learning, and Real Risks

Video games have become one of the most practised leisure activities among children and teenagers. They generate legitimate concerns — addiction, violence, sedentary behaviour — but also, according to research, real benefits depending on the type of game and how they are used.

A nuanced view, informed by data, helps parents navigate without demonising or simply allowing everything.

What research says about video games

Possible benefits

Some games develop real skills: visuomotor coordination, problem-solving, strategic planning, cooperation, creativity (sandbox games like Minecraft). Multiplayer games can also strengthen social bonds and a sense of group belonging.

Real risks

Excessive use is associated with sleep disturbances, declining academic results, a feeling of emptiness when the screen is absent, and sometimes a behavioural dependency that meets clinical criteria. Some free-to-play games use reward mechanisms designed to maximise time spent — not the child's experience.

What matters: context

The same game can have very different effects depending on whether it is played for an hour per week with family or six hours a day alone in a bedroom. The child's age, the game's content, and the presence or absence of a parental framework broadly moderate the effects.

What parents can do

Know the games

Playing with one's child, watching videos, reading PEGI ratings — understanding what the child is playing is a prerequisite for any discussion.

Establish clear rules

Maximum time per day, no screens after 9pm, screen-free zones (bedroom, meals) — rules should be discussed, not imposed unilaterally, and applied consistently.

Take addiction seriously

If removing access to games produces intense irritability, aggression, social isolation, or a loss of interest in any other activity — this is a signal that warrants professional support.
