Paranoid Personality Test: What It Measures and How to Read It
This test assesses TRAITS of dispositional mistrust inspired by the DSM-5 criteria (paranoid personality) and by the PID-5 model (Suspiciousness facet, public domain): a tendency to interpret others' intentions as malevolent, hypervigilance to threat, doubts about the loyalty of loved ones, grudge-holding and touchiness. It measures a DEGREE of trait on a continuum, never a disorder. Mistrust can also be adaptive in a genuinely hostile context. Only a professional can distinguish a marked trait from a personality disorder.
In the article that follows, I explore personality types. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a 16 personality types test that helps you take stock of your personality profile. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results. I also wrote a book on this subject, The Practical CBT Guide, if you would like to go further.
What the test measures
- A tendency to interpret others' intentions and actions as hostile or malevolent.
- Constant vigilance towards possible threats in the social environment.
- Recurrent and unjustified doubts about the faithfulness and loyalty of loved ones.
- A tendency to hold grudges, to feel offended and to react with resentment.
How to interpret your score
The result reads as an intensity, not as a diagnosis:
- Traits barely marked: The traits measured are low or balanced; they do not strongly structure the way you function.
- Moderate traits: Moderate traits emerge along certain axes.
- Marked traits: Clear traits stand out and colour the way you function.
- Very marked traits (non-diagnostic screening): Dominant traits emerge. This test makes no diagnosis: only a professional can, after a full clinical assessment.
