The Protective Parent: The Fine Line Between Security and Overprotection

Parental protection is at the heart of the parenting role. Protecting one's child from physical, emotional, and social dangers — this is a biological and psychological necessity. But protection has a tipping point: beyond a certain threshold, what was reassuring becomes stifling.
In the article that follows, I explore childhood wounds and their traces. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a childhood trauma (ACE) test that helps you take stock of how your childhood still marks you today. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.
The overprotective parent — sometimes called a "helicopter parent" — doesn't let their child fail, doesn't allow them to solve their own problems, anticipates every difficulty before it arises. The intention is loving. But the effect on the child can be damaging.
What overprotection can produce
A child who doesn't believe in their abilities
If every time the child encounters an obstacle the parent intervenes, the child never accumulates the experiences of autonomous success that build self-confidence. They learn implicitly that adults don't trust them to manage alone — and eventually come to share this conviction.
Difficulty handling new situations
The overprotected child can be very comfortable in familiar, parent-controlled contexts, and very helpless in new situations. Tolerance for uncertainty is acquired through progressive exposure to unknown situations — not by avoiding them.
Paradoxical anxiety
Protecting an anxious child by avoiding all anxiety-provoking situations doesn't reduce anxiety: it reinforces it. CBT for anxiety is based precisely on progressive exposure — the opposite of protection.
What helps
Letting the child solve their own problems before intervening, accepting that they sometimes fail (and that this is normal), resisting the urge to anticipate every difficulty — these adjustments allow the child to develop the resources they will need throughout their life.
