Social Media and Teenagers: Between Connection, Comparison, and Real Risks

Social media are an integral part of the world of today's teenagers. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube — these platforms are spaces for socialising, expression, and belonging. Banning them is neither realistic nor necessarily wise. Leaving them without framework or discussion isn't either.

What helps parents and professionals is understanding what research actually says about the effects of social media — without catastrophising and without naivety.

What research says

On self-esteem

Prolonged exposure to idealised images — perfect bodies, travel, success — activates social comparison mechanisms that can degrade self-esteem, particularly in girls between 11 and 16. This effect is documented, but its magnitude varies by profile.

On sleep

The phone in the bedroom, night-time notifications, screen stimulation before sleep — all these factors disturb teenagers' sleep. And lack of sleep in turn worsens anxiety, irritability, and academic performance.

On social bonds

Social media can strengthen existing bonds, facilitate belonging to communities of interest, and allow isolated teenagers to find peers. They are not only a vector of suffering.

Signs of problematic use

Intense irritability if the phone is removed, loss of interest in offline activities, chronically disturbed sleep, anxiety linked to the absence of "likes" or to managing one's image — these signals indicate a use worth discussing.

What helps

Discussing openly (not just imposing rules), negotiating phone-free zones (bedroom, meals), taking an interest in what the teenager consumes and with whom — a trusting relationship on this subject is infinitely more effective than surveillance.
