Social media and teens: connection, comparison and real risks

Social media is an integral part of today's teenage world. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube — these platforms are spaces for socialising, for self-expression, for belonging. Banning them is neither realistic nor necessarily wise. Leaving them without any framework or conversation is no better.

What helps parents and professionals is understanding what research actually says about the effects of social media — without catastrophising and without naivety.

What the research says

On self-esteem

Prolonged exposure to idealised images — perfect bodies, travel, success — activates social comparison mechanisms that can erode self-esteem, particularly in girls aged between 11 and 16. This effect is documented, but its magnitude varies from one profile to another.

On sleep

The phone in the bedroom, night-time notifications, the stimulation of a screen just before sleep — all of these factors disrupt adolescent sleep. And lack of sleep in turn worsens anxiety, irritability and school performance.

On social bonds

Social media can strengthen existing bonds, make it easier to belong to communities of interest, and allow isolated teenagers to find peers. It is not solely a vector of suffering.

The signs of problematic use

Intense irritability when the phone is taken away, loss of interest in offline activities, chronically disrupted sleep, anxiety linked to the absence of "likes" or to managing one's image — these signals point to a pattern of use that deserves to be discussed.

What helps

Talking openly (not simply imposing rules), negotiating phone-free zones (the bedroom, mealtimes), taking an interest in what your teenager is consuming and with whom — a relationship of trust on this subject is infinitely more effective than surveillance.

If your teenager is in distress or you fear for their safety, contact your local emergency services, and look for a helpline in your country at findahelpline.com or through befrienders.org.
