Trauma Bond Test — Why You Can't Leave: what it measures and how to interpret your score

Trauma bonding is the paradoxical attachment to a person who harms us. Described by Patrick Carnes (1997) and Dutton-Painter (1981), it combines violence-reconciliation cycle (Walker 1979), intermittent reinforcement (mechanism close to addiction), inability to leave despite awareness, and progressive isolation. This 30-question test evaluates four dimensions of your current experience to help you understand WHY you stay — and identify the most relevant resources (specialized therapy, safety plan, external support). It does not evaluate your partner; it evaluates your attachment. If physical safety is threatened, contact a domestic violence helpline in your country (find one at findahelpline.com).

In the article that follows, I explore toxic relationships and whether to stay or leave. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed a toxic relationship test that helps you take stock of how toxic your relationship really is. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.

What the test measures

  • Alternation between tension/conflict phases and intense tenderness (Walker 1979 cycle).
  • Emotional impossibility to walk away lastingly, returns after breakup attempts.
  • Behavioral dependency on unpredictable positive moments (Skinner / Dutton-Painter 1981).
  • Gap between intellectual knowledge (toxic relationship) and concrete ability to act.
Take the test: Toxic Relationship Detection → — To situate the trauma bond within the wider relationship, measure toxicity across manipulation, control, devaluation and isolation.

How to interpret your score

Your result reads as an intensity, not a diagnosis:

  • No trauma bond identified : Your relationship shows few signs of traumatic attachment. You retain your decision freedom and resources.
  • Signs to monitor : Elements of trauma bond appear occasionally. The awareness work has begun — that's an important step.
  • Moderate to high trauma bond dynamic : The trauma bonding dynamic is installed. Cycle, inability to leave, and intermittent reinforcement accumulate. Without intervention, the situation tends to worsen.
  • Serious situation requiring priority action : The trauma bond is intense and several dimensions are seriously affected. If you are in physical danger, your safety is the absolute priority.

What your full report includes

Beyond the 5 questions, the detailed PDF report (from €2.99) includes:

  • Introduction : This report is a self-assessment, not a diagnosis. It analyzes your attachment experience across four dimensions inspired by Carnes (1997) and Dutton-Painter (1981): violence-reconciliation cycle, inability to leave, intermittent reinforcement, awareness-action gap. The results help you clarify where you stand and identify priority resources.
  • Global Score : Your global score reflects the combined intensity of trauma bond in your current relationship. The higher the score, the heavier the situation — and the more specialized support becomes indispensable, particularly in case of violence indicators.
  • Analysis by Dimension : Each dimension sheds light on a facet of trauma bond. The Walker cycle (D1) describes the violence-reconciliation dynamic. Inability to leave (D2) measures the emotional trap. Intermittent reinforcement (D3) explains neurobiological dependency. The awareness-action gap (D4) reveals progressive isolation.
  • Recommendations : Three paths exist depending on your situation: (1) build inner safety and lucidity before acting; (2) prepare a concrete exit plan with a professional; (3) prioritize immediate physical safety if violence is present. No option is universal — your situation is unique. A domestic violence helpline in your country (find one at findahelpline.com) can help you clarify without commitment.
  • Resources : Carnes P. (1997) — The Betrayal Bond (founding framework, 9 conditions of trauma bond). Dutton D. & Painter S. (1981) — Traumatic Bonding (seminal article). Walker L.E. (1979) — The Battered Woman Syndrome (violence-reconciliation cycle, 3 phases). Inspired by Bowlby (attachment) and Skinner (intermittent reinforcement). The full personalised report (your precise score, your profile per dimension, your recommendations) is paid.
