Video games have become one of the most popular leisure activities among children and teenagers. They generate legitimate concerns — addiction, violence, a sedentary lifestyle — but also, according to research, real benefits depending on the type of game and the way it is used.
A nuanced, data-informed view helps parents navigate without demonising games or simply letting things happen.
What research says about video games
The possible benefits
Some games develop genuine skills: hand-eye coordination, problem solving, strategic planning, cooperation, creativity (sandbox games such as Minecraft). Multiplayer games can also strengthen social ties and a sense of belonging to a group.
The real risks
Excessive use is associated with sleep problems, declining school results, a feeling of emptiness when the screen is absent, and sometimes a behavioural dependency that meets clinical criteria. Some free-to-play games use reward mechanisms designed to maximise time spent — not the child's experience.
What matters: context
The same game can have very different effects depending on whether it is played for an hour a week as a family or six hours a day alone in a bedroom. The child's age, the game's content, and the presence or absence of a parental framework largely moderate the effects.
What parents can do
Know the games
Play with your child, watch videos, read the PEGI ratings — understanding what your child plays is a prerequisite for any discussion.
Set clear rules
A daily time limit, no screens after 9pm, screen-free zones (bedroom, mealtimes) — the rules should be discussed rather than imposed unilaterally, and applied consistently.
Take addiction seriously
If withdrawing access to games produces intense irritability, aggression, social withdrawal, a loss of interest in every other activity — that is a signal that warrants professional support.
