School motivation is one of the most frequent parental concerns. And one of the least well understood. "They don't want to work" is often a symptom — not a cause. Behind lack of motivation, there is almost always something more specific to identify.
Two types of motivation
Intrinsic motivation
The child acts because they find the activity itself interesting — because they are learning something, because it is stimulating, because it has meaning. This is the most stable and durable form of motivation.
Extrinsic motivation
The child acts to obtain an external reward (grades, gifts, praise) or to avoid punishment. It can work in the short term, but it weakens long-term motivation if it becomes the only lever.
Most educational systems rely heavily on extrinsic motivation. This is not without consequences.
What kills motivation
The sense of incompetence
A child who has accumulated failures and is convinced they "won't manage" won't try. This conviction is not laziness — it is a form of protection against further disappointment. Restoring a sense of competence, even partially, is often the first piece of work.
Perceived lack of meaning
"What's the point?" — this question, when it remains without a satisfying answer, undermines motivation. Children (like adults) are motivated by activities that have meaning for them, that connect to something they care about.
Excessive pressure
Paradoxically, too much pressure destroys intrinsic motivation. A child who works to avoid disappointing their parents cannot learn to find pleasure in learning.
What restarts motivation
Small victories, autonomy in choices (when to work, which subject to start with), interest shown by the adult in what the child loves — these levers, combined, create the conditions in which motivation can re-emerge.
