School Motivation: Why Some Children Just Do Not Want To

School motivation is one of the most common parental concerns. And one of the least well understood. "He doesn't feel like working" is usually a symptom — not a cause. Behind a lack of motivation there is almost always something more precise to identify.

The two types of motivation

Intrinsic motivation

The child acts because they find interest in the activity itself — because they are learning something, because it is stimulating, because it makes sense. This is the most stable and most durable form of motivation.

Extrinsic motivation

The child acts to obtain an external reward (marks, presents, praise) or to avoid a punishment. It can work in the short term, but it weakens long-term motivation if it becomes the only lever.

Most education systems rely heavily on extrinsic motivation. That is not without consequences.

What kills motivation

The feeling of incompetence

A child who has accumulated failures and is convinced they "won't manage it" will not try. That conviction is not laziness — it is a form of protection against another disappointment. Restoring a sense of competence, even partially, is often the first piece of work.

A lack of perceived meaning

"What's the point?" — when this question goes without a satisfying answer, it erodes motivation. Children (like adults) are motivated by activities that mean something to them, that connect to something they care about.

Excessive pressure

Paradoxically, too much pressure destroys intrinsic motivation. A child who works in order to avoid disappointing their parents cannot learn to find pleasure in learning.

What rekindles motivation

Small victories, autonomy in choices (when to work, which subject to start with), genuine interest shown by the adult in what the child enjoys — these levers, combined, create the conditions in which motivation can be reborn.
