Empathy Deficit: Measurable Markers in a Conversation
The deafening silence of absent empathy: when the messages speak for themselves
As Gildas Garrec, CBT psychotherapist in Nantes and founder of Psychologie et Sérénité, I meet people every day grappling with complex, sometimes toxic relationships. An empathy deficit is often at the heart of these dynamics, but it is incredibly difficult to pin down in the continuous flow of spoken interactions. An unfortunate word, a misinterpreted sentence... speech always leaves the door open to reinterpretation, to doubt.
In the article that follows, I explore empathy and healthy emotional distance. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed an empathy test that helps you take stock of your level of empathy and what it costs you. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.
Yet there is one implacable mirror of our communications: the written conversation. Your text messages, WhatsApp, Messenger… Every time-stamped word is a fingerprint of the exchange. A single message can always be reinterpreted, but dozens or hundreds of time-stamped messages draw a pattern that cannot be rewritten. Writing freezes the sequence and makes readable what speech leaves elusive. It is precisely this ability to reveal patterns over time that makes the psychological analysis of written conversations so powerful, particularly for unmasking an empathy deficit.
How can this cruel lack be detected through the words we exchange, especially when it is part of patterns of manipulation or control? Let's dive into the analysis of these measurable markers.
The art of disconnection: when the other person doesn't exist in your exchanges
The first sign of an empathy deficit in a written conversation is emotional disconnection. Messages from a person who lacks empathy reveal a persistent inability to recognize, validate, or even acknowledge your emotions and experiences. The exchange becomes a disguised monologue, in which your concerns are systematically minimized or ignored.
Here are some concrete examples of messages that betray this disconnection:
"You're overthinking this. It's fine, it'll pass, don't make a drama out of it."* * What this reveals: This type of message directly invalidates your feelings. It denies the legitimacy of what you feel, making you doubt your own perception. Over time, such a pattern of minimization is exhausting and destructive to self-esteem. As John Gottman's work highlights in Gottman's 4 Horsemen: 4 Signs That Threaten Your Relationship, criticism and contempt are clear indicators of relational distress, and this form of devaluation is a written manifestation of it. "Oh yeah, and you know what happened to me today? It's unbelievable..."* (in response to a message where you share a personal difficulty) * What this reveals: The conversation is systematically redirected toward the other person, without even acknowledging what you just shared. This is not a one-off oversight, but a recurring pattern of "turn-taking" in which the other person is simply waiting for their opportunity to talk about themselves, without genuine listening. "I don't see why you're angry, I didn't do anything wrong."* (after a clearly hurtful action on their part) * What this reveals: This is a form of denial of responsibility and an inability to put themselves in your position and imagine your suffering. The absence of any acknowledgment of their impact on you is a clear sign of a lack of empathy.A single message can be excusable. But the repetition of these patterns in your written exchanges, made visible through timestamps, reveals a persistent inability to put themselves in your shoes and offer you genuine emotional support.
Silent manipulation: words that twist reality
An empathy deficit is fertile ground for manipulation. In toxic relationships, written messages can become insidious tools for distorting your perception of reality, making you feel guilty, or controlling you. These tactics, often subtle, become obvious when observed across the continuity of hundreds of messages.
"I never said that. You always misinterpret what I say, you're becoming paranoid."* What this reveals: This is the very essence of gaslighting*. The manipulator denies facts or words, pushing you to doubt your memory and your sanity. The repetition of this phrase in your conversations is a major warning sign, as it aims to destabilize you and make you more malleable.Join our exchange community on WhatsApp
