Fire-Related Impulse Test (Pyromania): what it measures and how to interpret your score
This test is a SCREENING self-assessment inspired by DSM-5 criteria (pyromania): fascination with or attraction to fire, rising tension before the act, relief or gratification, ABSENCE of a utilitarian motive (insurance, revenge, ideology). Honesty note: unlike kleptomania, there is no validated general-public self-report scale for pyromania; general impulsivity draws on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (Patton, 1995). Pyromania is very rare and most deliberate fires reflect no disorder. This test makes NO diagnosis. Any fire-related acting out is an emergency: contact a professional and, in case of danger, emergency services.
In the article that follows, I explore obsessions and compulsions. If you recognise yourself in this theme, I designed an OCD test that helps you take stock of the presence of intrusive thoughts and rituals. It comes with a guide to extend your reflection beyond the results.
What the test measures
- Marked interest, attraction or curiosity about fire and its contexts.
- Rising tension or arousal preceding fire-setting.
- Pleasure, relief or appeasement linked to fire or setting it.
- Setting fires without utilitarian motive, inability to resist, consequences.
How to interpret your score
Your result reads as an intensity, not a diagnosis:
- Weakly marked traits : Measured traits are weak or balanced; they do not strongly structure your functioning.
- Moderate traits : Moderate traits emerge across axes.
- Marked traits : Clear traits stand out and color your functioning.
- Very marked traits (non-diagnostic screening) : Dominant traits stand out. This test makes no diagnosis: only a professional can, after a full clinical evaluation.
